Two Convention Vans each arrived at Wilkinsburg High School in October 2008 the old fashion way. The trip took us cross country, on the back roads that make an awesome ride. And you would not believe all conversation onboard the vans thanks to Carol Moore Schartner. The Parkway was closed for repaving (the parkway was out of service) and the van drivers got us their.
Picture fifty (50) WHS Alumni departing Monroeville’s Holiday Inn on Moss Blvd., to 22W, to Stroschein Road (by the Shopping Mall on Center Rd), then Pitcairn Rd south, Wall Ave, TriBoro Expy, 5th Ave, thru . East McKeesport, Wilmerding, North Versailles, East Pittsburgh, Turtle Creek, pasted the Super Wal-Mart (were the Greater Pittsburgh Drive In theater was) onto Rt 30, over the Westinghouse bridge, Chalfant, past Vincent Pizza Park, Forest Hills Park, onto Ardmore Blvd, passed 'Old Abe' the Lincoln statue, to Penn Ave, Center St. and Wallace Ave.
We were welcomed with individual tours of the school facilities by the student council classmates and the student adviser whom are at the top of their game. Our school gymnasiums, auditorium, chemistry and the new forensic labs are awesome. Students have access to wireless note book computers for their projects, research and the library has a fair size computer lab with twenty units available for instruction that looks wonderful.
The return trip was through Forest Hills, over Westinghouse bridge, past the old drive in (not their anymore), Boy does that brings back memories, north over a dozen back road streets to Northern Pike, Moss Blvd and Holiday Inn.
An awesome three day week-end. With the class of 1958 celebratation Friday get together at the Holiday Inn, tour of high school, dinner dance and Sunday buffet breakfast. With 196 people in attendance at Edgewood Country Club, I believe breaks the record set by the class of 1960.
